University Museum of Contemporary Art
The University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) in Coyoacán is a central hub for modern art in Mexico City. Opened in 2008, it is part of the impressive Cultural Center of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), a UNESCO World Heritage site. Designed by renowned architect Teodoro González de León, the building captivates with its clear, modern aesthetic, offering a fitting setting for the exhibited works. Here you'll find an extensive collection of contemporary art from Mexico and Latin America, encompassing works from 1952 onwards. Exhibitions change regularly, presenting a variety of media, from painting and sculpture to installations and video art, often prompting reflection and addressing current social issues. MUAC plays an important role in the country's academic and cultural landscape. Our Tip: Plan your visit on a weekday, ideally in the morning, to avoid the largest crowds and enjoy the art in peace. After your museum visit, you can explore UNAM's expansive gardens and other cultural facilities. For arrival, the Metro to Universidad station is recommended; from there, free Pumabuses run across the campus.
