    Viana do Castelo lies at the mouth of the Lima into the Atlantic, some 70 kilometers north of Porto. The old town around Praça da República features Renaissance and Baroque facades, with the Santa Luzia Basilica perched above on the eponymous mountain. Viana is known for gold filigree jewelry, embroidered traditional costumes and the August Romaria d'Agonia festival. Cabedelo surf and kite beach lies opposite on the south bank.

    Sanctuary of Saint Lucy

    20th-century basilica on the mountain above the city, in Neo-Byzantine style. Narrow stairs lead up to the dome, from there the view extends over the Lima estuary and the coast. You can ascend by funicular, on foot via stairs, or by car.

    Culture and History

    In the 16th century, Viana was an important port for cod fishing off Newfoundland and trade with Northern Europe and Brazil. Many townhouses date from this period. The iron bridge over the Lima was opened in 1878 and is often attributed to Gustave Eiffel.The highlight of the year is the Romaria de Nossa Senhora d'Agonia around August 20th, with parades in traditional costumes, gold jewelry, fireworks, and carpets made of flowers and salt on the streets. The Museu do Traje displays the regional costumes.

    Travelling in Viana do Castelo

    From Porto, you travel by regional train for about an hour and a half. The station is on the edge of the old town. To Cabedelo beach, a small ferry crosses the Lima in summer; otherwise, it's over the bridge. The funicular up Santa Luzia starts near the station.
