Varberg

Fortress and Danish PeriodThe city dates back to the 12th century, but was originally located about seven kilometers further south. Built in the 1280s, the fortress was the most important on the Kattegat under the Kalmar Union. It was abandoned in 1830 and subsequently served as a feared prison. Varberg belonged to Denmark until 1645.Bathing and Spa TraditionToday's Kallbadhuset, dating from 1903, is already the third cold bathhouse on this site. After a restoration, it was reopened in 1997, with traditional naked bathing in separate areas.Radio HistoryEast of the city stands the Grimeton Radio Station, the world's only preserved electromechanical radio transmitter.

By TrainVarberg is on the West Coast Line between Gothenburg and Malmö or Copenhagen. The trip from Gothenburg takes about 40 minutes. No direct trains from Stockholm; change in Gothenburg.From July 2025, trains will run through a new tunnel under the city center. The new station is in the northern center, only about 150-200 meters from the old one. Platforms are reached via lifts, escalators, and stairs.Regional trains from Hallandstrafiken run from Borås. Check the timetable in advance.By Car and BikeThe E6/E20 passes directly by the city.The Lorensberg parking garage on Östra Vallgatan is located at the edge of the city center.Several cycling paths lead through Varberg; the city is also easily accessible for cyclists.In the CityThe city center, the fortress, and Kallbadhuset are easily accessible on foot.Hallandstrafiken operates a small city bus network, with buses running at least every half hour during the day.
