    Halmstad, Halland's capital, is on the Kattegat midway between Göteborg and Malmö. It is primarily known for the roughly 4-km-long sandy beach of Tylösand. Halmstad gained town rights in 1307 and was a fortified Danish outpost until 1645 against Sweden; the castle on the Nissan dates from then. The centre retains many half-timbered houses; Picasso's Kvinnohuvud stands on the Nissan.

    1Tylösand Strand

    Tylösand, west of Halmstad, is one of Sweden's most famous beaches: an approximately four-kilometer-long sandy beach with dunes, which has been voted the country's best beach multiple times. In summer, it's very busy here, with hotels, restaurants, and a golf course all around. The 18 km long hiking trail Prins Bertils stig passes by Tylösand.

    2Halmstad Slott (Schloss Halmstad)

    Halmstad Castle on the River Nissan was built between 1590 and 1615, when Halland still belonged to Denmark. Today it is the residence of the County Governor (Landshövding) of Halland Province. During a stroll through the city center, you'll see the complex on the riverbank.

    3Picassoparken und Kvinnohuvud

    In Picassoparken, on the banks of the Nissan, stands Picasso's 15-meter-high sculpture Kvinnohuvud (Woman's Head), made of blasted concrete. It depicts Picasso's last wife, Jacqueline Roque, and was executed and installed by Norwegian artist Carl Nesjar, a friend of Picasso's. The park is ideal for a stroll along the river.

    4Halland Art Museum

    The Hallands Konstmuseum in Halmstad features temporary exhibitions and works from its own collection. The museum also includes the open-air museum Hallandsgården. However, works by the artist group Halmstadgruppen can be seen at the Mjellby konstmuseum outside the city. Current exhibitions and opening hours are available at hallandskonstmuseum.se.

    History and Culture

    Danish HeritageHalmstad has been a town since 1307 and was considered the largest town on Halland's west coast during the Middle Ages. From 1598, a fortress was built, enclosing the center from the castle in the south to Norre Katt Park in the north. Its northern town gate, the Norre port, still stands today. Danish King Christian IV commissioned the castle, which was completed in 1619. In August 1645, Halmstad became Swedish; today, the provincial governor resides in the castle, and its gardens are freely accessible.Church and Old TownSt. Nikolai kyrka on Stora Torg dates from the 14th century and is known for its stained-glass windows; the large windows were created by Einar Forseth. Half-timbered houses are preserved around the church. The square also features Carl Milles' fountain Europa and the Bull.The Halmstad GroupIn 1929, six artists, including brothers Axel and Erik Olson, formed the Halmstad Group here, Sweden's first Surrealists. Their works are exhibited at Mjellby Konstgård, approximately three kilometers northwest of the center. The Museet i Halmstad by the river showcases painted tapestries and living spaces from the 17th to 19th centuries.

    Varberg on the Kattegat coast in Halland combines fortress history with a long bathing tradition. The Varbergs fästning was built in the 1280s, was the most important fortress on the Kattegat coast during the Kalmar Union, and today houses the Halland Museum of Cultural History with the bog body find of the Bockstensmannen. In the sea stands the Kallbadhuset from 1903, an oriental-style cold bathhouse on stilts, with separate areas and saunas for women and men. The beach promenade leads approximately 2.5 km from the Kallbadhuset to Apelviken. Nature enthusiasts are drawn to the Getterön peninsula, a nature reserve with wetlands that attract many birds. June to August are suitable for beach and water sports, spring and autumn for quieter tours along the coast.

Today, most come for the beaches and the steep coast between Gilbjerg Hoved in the west and Nakkehoved in the east.
