Cádiz

The Costa de la Luz, the "Coast of Light", stretches along the Atlantic from the Portuguese border to Tarifa. It is characterized by long, wide sandy beaches and a particularly clear light, plus historic cities like Cádiz and Jerez, white villages like Vejer, excellent conditions for wind and kitesurfing, and a cuisine rich in fish and sherry.

In Jerez de la Frontera in the province of Cádiz, much revolves around sherry, flamenco, and horses. The city is known for its Bodegas, where you can taste the various sherry types from Fino to Oloroso. A highlight is the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art (Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre) with its show “Cómo bailan los caballos andaluces”. The historic center, with the Cathedral and the Alcázar, an 11th-century Moorish fortress, invites you for strolls. Many famous flamenco artists hail from Jerez; the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco is located in Palacio Pemartín. In May, the Horse Fair (Feria del Caballo) takes place. For a deeper insight into sherry production, a guided tour through a traditional Bodega is worthwhile.

Conil de la Frontera is popular for its expansive sandy beaches, its vibrant gastronomy centered around tuna and fish, and the white old town of a traditional Andalusian fishing village.

The white village of Vejer de la Frontera lies on a hill near the Costa de la Luz with views to the Strait of Gibraltar. Winding, flower-adorned streets, the well-preserved town wall with gates such as the Puerta de Sancho IV, the Plaza de España with its fountain of Sevillian tiles, and viewpoints like the Mirador de la Cobijada characterize the place.

The Doñana National Park at the mouth of the Guadalquivir is UNESCO World Heritage and a key European wetland. Marshes, dunes, and pine forests offer refuge to migratory birds and endangered species like the Iberian lynx.
