    At the open-air museum near La Frontera in the north of the island stand the stone houses of the old village of Guinea, preserving buildings of the first inhabitants and later settlers. Right next door is the breeding center for the El Hierro giant lizard, an endangered endemic species and a symbol of the island. Guided visits from Tuesday to Sunday.

    On the La Dehesa plateau in the west of the island, approximately 300 hectares grow juniper trees, the Sabinas, which the trade winds have bent into bizarre, twisted shapes. The Sabina is the official natural symbol of El Hierro. An unpaved track leads to the car park; the turn-off is near the Santuario Virgen de los Reyes.

    3Prime Meridian Monument

    Near the Faro de Orchilla lighthouse, a 1982 monument commemorates that the Prime Meridian long ran through here. Ptolemy had already set it at the world's westernmost known point, and in 1634, under Louis XIII, France made the Meridian of El Hierro official. Only in 1884 was Greenwich internationally established as the Prime Meridian.
