    Roque de Agando

    The striking rock tower between Barranco de La Laja and the Benchijigua Valley reaches around 1,247 meters and is considered La Gomera's most famous natural monument. It is the exposed remnant of a volcanic plug. Its name originates from the language of the indigenous people and means 'comb'.

    Nationalpark Garajonay

    2Nationalpark Garajonay

    Established in 1981, the National Park covers over ten percent of the island, becoming a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986. It protects the Old World's best-preserved laurel forest, the Laurisilva – an evergreen moist forest that covered much of Southern Europe in the Tertiary. The terrain is often misty; marked paths wind through.

    Alto de Garajonay

    3Alto de Garajonay

    At approximately 1,487 meters, Alto de Garajonay is La Gomera's highest point and gives its name to the national park. A legend attributes the name to the lovers Gara and Jonay, while linguists consider an Old Canarian origin meaning 'highest point' more likely. The summit is located in the municipality of Vallehermoso, in the heart of the island.

    Count Hernán Peraza the Elder had the defensive tower built between 1447 and 1450 in San Sebastián de La Gomera. It is the only surviving tower from the time of the conquest of the Canary Islands, approximately 15 meters high and Late Gothic, with whitewashed walls and red cornerstones. During the uprising of the Gomeros, the ruling class sought refuge here.

    On the northwest coast near Vallehermoso, the sea has exposed the interior of an old volcanic vent over approximately two kilometers. The vertical basalt columns resemble organ pipes and gave the natural monument its name. The rock face belongs to the basement rock, the oldest rocks on the island.
