    The two monasteries of Suso and Yuso are UNESCO World Heritage sites. San Millán is considered the cradle of the Spanish language, where the Glosas Emilianenses provided some of the earliest written evidence of Romance on the Iberian Peninsula. The complex offers deep insights into the region's history and culture.

    The lower monastery in the valley was rebuilt in the 16th century, replacing a Romanesque predecessor, and the Gothic church was constructed from 1504. Augustinian Recollects have resided here since 1878. Visitors can see the 1780 library and some 30 handwritten 17th-century choral books, each weighing 40 to 60 kg.

    The upper monastery originated in the late 6th century on the slope around the rock caves where the hermit Millán lived and died in 574. 10th-century horseshoe arches showcase the Mozarabic style; later, Romanesque elements were added. A manuscript produced here contains the Glosas Emilianenses, considered the earliest written evidence of Spanish and Basque.

    The Cistercian convent in the nearby town of Cañas was founded in 1170 and is one of the order's first women's monasteries on the Iberian Peninsula. Instead of glass, alabaster panels let in diffused light in the Gothic apse, hence its nickname Monasterio de la Luz. In the museum stands the Gothic sarcophagus of Abbess Urraca Díaz de Haro.
