    The West Gate is one of the four original gates of Laguardia's city wall, located on a hill above the Rioja Alavesa. The others were Mercadal, San Juan, and Santa Engracia, with the Carnicerías Gate added in the 15th century. Nearby rises the Romanesque defensive tower Torre Abacial from the 12th century, next to the Church of Santa María de los Reyes.

    The church in the walled old town of Laguardia was begun in Romanesque style in the late 12th century and completed in the 15th century with Gothic and Renaissance elements. Its late 14th-century portal is famous, its figures painted in the 17th century and having preserved their colours to this day. You can visit the portal on a guided tour.

    3Dolmen La Chabola de la Hechicera

    The passage grave near Elvillar dates back around 5,500 years and was used for millennia as a collective grave. The burial chamber consists of nine large stone blocks, a passage of five smaller slabs leads inside, and the surrounding mound measures about 25 meters. Excavations unearthed the remains of at least 39 individuals, along with arrowheads, stone axes, and pottery.

    The Iron Age settlement between Laguardia and the Sierra de Cantabria was inhabited for about a thousand years until destroyed by fire. A small museum exhibits finds from the excavations, primarily conducted between 1973 and 1989, alongside a large settlement model. On site, you'll see two reconstructed houses and wall remains.

The Church of Santo Tomás impresses with its 1525 portal by Felipe Bigarny and its 18th-century baroque bell tower. An annual highlight is the Batalla del Vino on June 29, a traditional wine battle at the Riscos de Bilibio. In spring or autumn, you'll find pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds in the region. For wine tastings, book tours at the bodegas in the Barrio de la Estación in advance.
