    Torre Exenta

    1Torre Exenta

    The cathedral's free-standing bell tower, at approximately 70 m, is the tallest tower in La Rioja. Martín de Beratúa erected it in 1762, separate from the main building, traditionally due to the sandy subsoil. It is one of Spain's few detached church towers.

    The chapel on the south side of Plaza del Santo, opposite the cathedral, was built from 1487 and took on its present form in 1710. It was the first Cistercian foundation in town and seat of the Brotherhood of the Saint.

    The Cathedral on the Way of St. James was built from 1158 onwards and combines a Romanesque choir with Gothic naves. Opposite the tomb of Saint Domingo, a white rooster and a white hen live in a Gothic henhouse, recalling the legend of the roasted chicken that crowed again. In the transept stands the alabaster altarpiece by Damián Forment.

    Pedro I of Castile had the city walls built from around 1367, originally enclosing the Old Town for about 1.7 km with 38 towers, each 12 m high. It is La Rioja's most significant city fortification; several towers have been restored.
