    Haro, the center of Rioja Alta, is closely tied to Spanish wine culture. Here you'll find the historic Barrio de la Estación, a cluster of traditional bodegas that arose following the railway's arrival in the 19th century. The city center is marked by the Plaza de la Paz and its 18th-century town hall, while the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de la Vega is situated by the Jardines de la Vega. The Church of Santo Tomás impresses with its 1525 portal by Felipe Bigarny and its 18th-century baroque bell tower. An annual highlight is the Batalla del Vino on June 29, a traditional wine battle at the Riscos de Bilibio. In spring or autumn, you'll find pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds in the region. For wine tastings, book tours at the bodegas in the Barrio de la Estación in advance.

    Around the train station, where the Tudela–Bilbao line stopped from 1863, wineries began to establish themselves from 1877 to supply wine to France, which was affected by phylloxera. Today, seven traditional bodegas are located here, including CVNE, La Rioja Alta, and Muga. López de Heredia, with its Viña Tondonia brand, is the oldest among them.

    The Rocks of Bilibio lie around 6 km north of Haro, where the Ebro enters La Rioja. At the Hermitage of San Felices, named after Felices de Bilibio, the hermit who died here, the Batalla del Vino takes place every year on June 29th, where participants, dressed in white, douse each other with wine.

    The Basilica in the La Vega meadows is the sanctuary of the city's patron saint, a 14th-century Gothic Marian figure. It received its current Baroque form in the 18th century; the high altar by Santiago del Amo dates from 1740. A small museum is dedicated to the Virgen de la Vega.

    The parish church stands on La Mota hill above the old town and was built between 1512 and the early 17th century. Felipe Bigarny created the Plateresque portal with scenes of the Passion; the approximately 68-meter-high Baroque tower from 1725 became a model for church towers throughout La Rioja.
