    Parque Salburua

    The wetland on the eastern edge of the city, drained in the 19th century, has been re-naturalised since 1994 and has been recognised as a Ramsar site of international importance since 2002. It belongs to the Green Ring of Vitoria-Gasteiz; around 200 bird species have been observed here, and deer graze by the lagoons. The Ataria visitor center provides information about the lagoons, and easy circular paths lead to observation hides.

    The 13th and 14th-century Gothic cathedral, a medieval city fortification, inspired Ken Follett's novel World Without End. Under restoration for years, 'Abierto por obras' tours take you through the construction site with a helmet. On request, the tour can also ascend the tower for city views; book tickets in advance.

    Its medieval old town is oval-shaped and called La Almendra, 'the Almond'. King Sancho VI of Navarra founded Vitoria in 1181 as an extension of the Basque settlement Gasteiz. South of it lies the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca with the monument to the Battle of Vitoria, where Wellington defeated Joseph Bonaparte on June 21, 1813.
