    Sigüenza, a historic city in Castile-La Mancha, preserves its medieval character with cobbled streets and an impressive fortress. The cityscape is dominated by the imposing Catedral de Santa María, a blend of Romanesque and Gothic styles, whose interior houses the famous tomb of the Doncel de Sigüenza. Directly above it stands the majestic Castillo de Sigüenza, now a Parador, which was once a bishop's residence and offers expansive views over the landscape. On the Plaza Mayor, you'll find arcaded buildings that invite you to linger and form the historic heart of the city. Explore the narrow streets around the cathedral to experience its authentic atmosphere. A visit in spring or autumn allows you to enjoy the city at mild temperatures and with fewer tourists.     The Old Town stretches up the slope, from the Cathedral below to the Castle above. Between them lie steep alleys with medieval houses. Below, a neoclassical quarter adjoins, laid out by the city's last Prince-Bishop. The most beautiful walk is from the Plaza Mayor up to the Castillo.

    The cathedral likely originated in the late 12th century; its lower parts are Romanesque, with a large Gothic structure rising above. Later additions included a Renaissance altar, a Plateresque sacristy, and a late Gothic cloister. Famous is the alabaster tomb of the Doncel de Sigüenza, Martín Vázquez de Arce, who fell in the War of Granada in 1486 and is depicted lying on his side, reading.

    The square next to the cathedral was laid out by Cardinal Mendoza, Bishop of Sigüenza in the 1470s. Arcaded houses from the 15th and 16th centuries line one side; opposite stands the three-story town hall with arcades. The cathedral's bell tower completes the square.

    4Castle of Sigüenza

    The castle above the old town dates back to a Moorish fortress that Bernard von Agen conquered for the Christians in 1123. Subsequently, bishops who were also city lords resided here; in the late 18th century, it was converted into a bishop's palace. Following extensive restoration, it has been a Parador hotel since 1976.
