West Kenya extends from Lake Victoria to the Ugandan border, away from the classic safari routes. Around Kisumu, Kenya's third-largest city, Luo culture, fishing villages, and lake boat trips combine with rainforest, volcanic caves, and a small savannah park.
Kisumu and Lake VictoriaKisumu, located on Winam Gulf, a shallow arm of Lake Victoria, is the cultural hub of the Luo. Museums, fishing beaches like Dunga Beach and boat trips to hippos make the city a regional base. Southwest, in the Lambwe Valley near Homa Bay, lies Ruma National Park, Kenya's last home for the roan antelope.Rainforest and MountainsNorth of Kisumu stretches Kakamega Forest, considered Kenya's last remnant of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest, with vervet monkeys and some 367 bird species. Further north, on the border with Uganda, Mount Elgon rises. In its Kitum Cave, elephants search for salt at night.Daily Life by the LakeBeyond parks and hiking trails, it’s worth observing daily life, influenced by the lake and markets such as Kibuye Market in Kisumu.
