Italy traditionally welcomes families with children with an open and hospitable attitude. The country's strong family culture means children are welcome in many places, and traveling with them is generally straightforward. Cultural sites, nature experiences, and Italian cuisine offer a wealth of opportunities for travelers of all ages. Safety meets European standards, but usual precautions apply in busy tourist areas.

Regarding the climate, the summer months (July, August) are very hot in many parts of the country. Traveling in spring (April, May, June) or autumn (September, October) offers milder temperatures, which are often better suited for activities with children.

Activities with Children

• Beaches and Coastlines: Italy boasts a long coastline with numerous family-friendly sandy beaches, especially along the Adriatic Sea, in Tuscany, Sardinia, and Sicily. Many beaches offer shallow water and are well-equipped with sun loungers, umbrellas, and playgrounds.

Practical Information for Families

• Baby Food and Diapers: Both are available in supermarkets (Supermercati), drugstores (Farmacie), and pharmacies (Farmacie, recognizable by a green cross) in all larger and many smaller towns. The selection of specific brands may vary, but common products are available.
• Medical Care: Medical care in Italy is good, especially in urban areas. Pharmacies are competent points of contact for minor ailments. It is advisable to take out travel health insurance and carry the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
• Breastfeeding in Public: Breastfeeding in public is generally tolerated and increasingly accepted in Italy. However, discretion is often appreciated.

High chairs (Seggiolone) are often available in tourist-heavy restaurants, though not guaranteed everywhere. An earlier dinner (before 8:00 PM) can offer a quieter atmosphere.

Mobility with Children

• Stroller Accessibility: In many historic city centers, such as Rome or Venice, cobblestones, uneven paths, steps, and narrow alleys can pose a challenge for strollers. A sturdy, foldable stroller or a baby carrier often proves more practical here.
• Car Seats in Rental Cars and Taxis:
  • Rental Cars: Car seats are legally mandatory in Italy for children under 12 years of age or less than 150 cm tall. It is strongly recommended to reserve them in advance when booking your rental car, as on-site availability may be limited.
