The route follows the Northeast Corridor from Boston via New York and Philadelphia to Washington, D.C. Traveling with Amtrak is most convenient: The fast Acela and the more affordable Northeast Regional connect Boston South Station, New York (Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station), Philadelphia 30th Street Station, and Washington Union Station. From August 2025, the new NextGen-Acela trains, offering only Business and First Class, will operate on the Acela line. Early booked tickets are significantly cheaper. A rental car is more a burden than a help in all four cities.
Four cities, pivotal to US history, lie on a single train line. You avoid a car, save on parking fees and traffic, and still experience the full spectrum: from Boston's Revolution to Philadelphia's Declaration of Independence and Washington's museums and monuments.
Open jaw: start and end are in different places
