    Morelia, capital of Michoacán, lies at about 1,900 meters in the western highlands. Its center, with over 200 historic buildings of pink trachyte, is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991; key features are the baroque cathedral, the arcades around Plaza de Armas, and the 18th-century aqueduct.The city is a good starting point for Lake Pátzcuaro, the surrounding Purépecha villages, and from late October to March, for the Monarch butterfly overwintering grounds.
