Sorrento's rich history dates back to antiquity, when it was founded by the Greeks as "Syrrentum" and later became an important Roman colony. Its strategic location shaped its development through Byzantine, Lombard, and Norman rule, which is reflected in the city's multifaceted cultural identity. The era of the Kingdom of Naples, in particular, left significant imprints on the city's structure and customs.Architecturally, Sorrento impresses with a mix of different eras. One finds medieval structures like the Sedile Dominova, the only preserved public loggia of its kind in Campania, alongside Baroque churches such as the Cathedral of Sorrento, which has been rebuilt multiple times over the centuries. The typical lemon groves and the elegant villas of noble families further shape the cityscape.Culturally, Sorrento is deeply connected to its traditions. The art of intarsia, or wood inlay, has a long history here and remains a significant craft today. Local festivals, especially the Holy Week processions, bear witness to deep religious devotion and are celebrated with great participation. The production of the famous Limoncello is also an integral part of the local culture and economy, deeply rooted in the region's agriculture.

Thanks to its compact size and picturesque Old Town, Sorrento is excellent to explore on foot; many areas are traffic-calmed or entirely car-free. For longer distances and excursions, the public bus system, especially by SITA Sud, offers good connections along the coast and to the surrounding villages. Single tickets are available in tobacco shops or kiosks; for frequent travelers, multi-journey tickets like the regional TIC card, which is also valid for the Circumvesuviana railway, are often worthwhile.This railway acts as Sorrento's 'Metro' and is the ideal connection to Naples as well as to the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum – for this, it's best to use official apps for current timetables. While bicycles and e-scooters are less prevalent due to the hilly topography, taxis are available but mostly costly, and ride-sharing services have not established themselves here. Plan your journeys in advance to avoid waiting times, especially during high season.
