The Abbey Church of Saint-Étienne, core of the Abbaye aux Hommes, is a masterpiece of Norman Romanesque architecture. William the Conqueror founded the abbey around 1063 and was buried here in 1087; his plain tombstone lies in the choir. The long Romanesque nave with powerful pillars and the Romanesque west towers define the building. The pointed spires and the choir were added during the Gothic period. The 18th-century monastic buildings now house Caen's city hall. Our Tip: Early in the morning, it is quiet and the light on the west facade is at its best.

The Mémorial de Caen is a significant museum and peace center dedicated to the history of the 20th century. It illuminates the causes and consequences of World War II, particularly the Allied landings in Normandy and the subsequent battle. Here, you'll find comprehensive exhibitions that guide you through the period of German occupation, the Resistance, and the Liberation. Another focus is on the Cold War and the question of peace in the world. The museum presents authentic documents, artifacts, and impressive multimedia installations that make the events tangible. The Colline aux Oiseaux is a floral park that was created in 1994 for the 50th anniversary of the Normandy landings on a former landfill site. It is located above the Mémorial de Caen and comprises several themed gardens, including a large rose garden, plus playgrounds and enclosures with farm animals such as sheep, goats, and geese. From the higher paths, you can enjoy views over the city. Our tip: From late May to June, the roses are in full bloom. The park can be easily combined with a visit to the Mémorial.
