    Arachova is a mountain village on the southern slopes of Mount Parnassus, about ten kilometers east of Delphi. In winter, it serves as the main base for the Parnassos ski center, attracting many guests from Athens on weekends. During the rest of the year, it primarily accommodates visitors to Delphi.The village is known for woven goods such as carpets and blankets, and for its Formaela cheese, which holds a protected designation of origin. Away from the main road, steep alleys and stairs wind between stone houses up to the clock tower and the church of Agios Georgios. In spring and autumn, hiking trails on Mount Parnassus begin here.

    The viewpoint lies on Arachova's upper edge, on Parnassus' southern slopes. From here, gaze over stone houses terracing down the slope. Clearly visible: Agios Georgios' bell tower and the clock tower on its rocky outcrop. Beyond, the valley opens towards Delphi.

    2Folklore Museum Arachova

    The museum is housed in the renovated old primary school of Arachova, a stone building from the early 20th century in the village center. On display are traditional costumes of the region, tools from agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as looms and textiles, including the Flokati rugs for which Arachova is known. A recreated living area with a kitchen shows daily life in the mountain village. Photos and documents commemorate, among other things, the Battle of Arachova in 1826. Also included are a library and an archive on local history.

    3Clock Tower of Arachova

    The Clock Tower, simply called Rolói by locals, stands on a rocky outcrop above the rooftops and is Arachova's landmark. From above, you overlook the entire town, the terraces below, and the valley stretching to the Kirphis Massif.The ascent leads via a staircase through the alleys and takes about ten minutes from the town centre, steep and without shade. At the top, apart from the tower and the view, there's nothing else that makes the journey worthwhile: and that's the point.The best time is late afternoon, when the sun falls over the valley from the west. In winter, the staircase can be icy; sturdy shoes are no luxury then.

    4Ski Center Parnassos

    The Parnassos Ski Centre is Greece's largest ski resort and the reason the mountain village of Arachova became a winter resort. Its facilities are spread across the two centres of Kelaria and Fterolakka and are located at approximately 1,600 to 2,250 metres.The season largely depends on snow conditions and usually runs from late December to early March. Greek weekend visitors from Athens dictate operations: Saturdays and Sundays are busy, while weekdays see empty slopes.From Arachova, it's about 25 kilometres uphill; the road is cleared, but snow chains may be required. In summer, the plateaus are a starting point for hikes in Parnassos National Park.

    5Livadi High Plain

    Above Arachova, the Livadi plateau opens up, a treeless karst basin amidst the fir-covered slopes of Parnass. It has been used for centuries as a summer pasture, so you'll encounter flocks of sheep and goats here rather than hikers.The road to the ski resort leads right through it; it's worth stopping for the view back to the ridge and down into the valley. In early summer, the plain blooms, and in winter, it serves as a base for snowshoeing tours.From Arachova, it's about ten kilometers uphill, with a height difference of over 500 meters. On the plateau, you'll find taverns that are open in winter and on summer weekends, but often closed during the week.

    Church Agios Georgios

    6Church Agios Georgios

    The Church of Agios Georgios stands at the top of a long staircase above the town and is the focal point of Arachova's most important festival. The Panigiri in honour of the saint lasts three days and falls on April 23rd, but is moved to the week after Easter if the date falls during Lent.The best-known event is the Race of the Elders, where men over sixty in traditional costumes run up the stairs to the church. The custom is intended to commemorate the participation of the Arachovites in the battles of the Greek War of Independence, in which the town defeated an Ottoman unit in 1826.Outside of the festival, the square in front of the church is primarily a quiet viewpoint. The climb up the stairs is strenuous, but short.

    The Perfetto central is located on the main street in the town center of Arachova. The cuisine combines Greek dishes with grilled meat and the local Formaella cheese, which is served here as Saganaki.

    To Tsoukali

    To Tsoukali is in the upper part of Arachova. Its name means 'cooking pot', and accordingly, the menu offers stews and oven dishes from Greek mountain cuisine, as well as grilled items.

    The Phterolakka in the town centre of Arachova is named after one of the two ski resorts on Parnass. It serves Greek mountain cuisine with lamb and goat dishes from the grill and oven.

    Food and Drink in Arachova

    Arachova is a winter sports resort, shaping its dining scene: restaurants with fireplaces, much meat, stews, and prices above average for the region. It's also the origin of Formaella cheese and known for its wine from Parnassus' southern slopes.

    Formaella Arachovas Parnassou

    This semi-hard cheese made from sheep's and goat's milk bears a Protected Designation of Origin and may only be produced in this region. It ripens in cylindrical wheels and is usually pan-fried in slices.

    Parnassus Wine

    Wine has long been grown on the southern slopes above the village; it's mostly sold openly and locally. In taverns, it's served in carafes.

    Slow-cooked and Oven-baked Dishes

    In winter, stews dominate: goat in tomato sauce, rooster with pasta, oven-baked lamb. Many houses cook ahead in wood-fired ovens during the day, so the daily dish is ready early.

    Hylopites and Trachanas

    Handmade egg noodles and dried sour milk semolina are staples of mountain cuisine and are also sold as souvenirs in Arachova. Trachanas is eaten as a thick soup with Feta.

    Honey and Spoon Sweets

    From the herb-rich slopes of Parnassus come thyme and fir honey, along with preserved fruits in syrup. The shops along the main street carry both, usually alongside carpets and cheese.

    History and Culture

    The Battle of ArachovaDuring the Greek War of Independence, rebels led by Georgios Karaiskakis defeated an Ottoman force near Arachova in 1826. Photos and documents in the town's Folklore Museum commemorate the battle.Architecture and CraftsThe townscape is characterized by stone houses with tiled roofs, descending in terraces down the hillside, interspersed with steep, cobbled alleys and stairs. A landmark is the Clock Tower perched on a rocky outcrop above the rooftops. Arachova is known for its woven goods; colorful rugs, blankets, and textiles are sold in many shops along the main street. The sheep's cheese Formaela holds a protected designation of origin.The Feast of Saint GeorgeThe patron saint of the town is Saint George, whose feast day on April 23rd is Arachova's most important annual event.     Arachova's nightlife is centered on the main street, offering a mix of relaxed bars and livelier venues, especially during the winter months. You'll find cozy spots here for an après-ski drink, like the YUKI Mountain Bar, but also clubs such as the Laax Club for longer evenings.

    Bar on the national road towards Amfissa, on the western outskirts of the town, thus outside the pedestrian zone. Access by car or taxi; walking from the town center along the road is unpleasant. Open mainly during the winter season.

    YUKI Mountain Bar

    Bar on Plateia Lakka, the square with the town's highest density of local spots. From here, you can easily explore several bars on foot without leaving the main street. Its operations clearly focus on the winter months.

    Club on the Panourgia on the eastern edge of town, outside the pedestrian zone. Like most clubs in Arachova, it primarily opens on winter weekends and gets going late, usually not before midnight. Outside the ski season, operation is irregular.

    On-site adventures

    Getting ThereKTEL Fokidas buses depart several times daily from Liosion Bus Terminal in Athens, via Livadia and Arachova to Delphi; the stop is on the main road. By car, drive from Athens via the A1 motorway and Livadia, allowing a good two hours. In winter, snow chains may be compulsory on the roads around Parnassus.LocallyYou can explore the town on foot; many alleys consist of stairs and are steep, and in winter, they can also be icy. For the ski center, the Livadi plateau, and hiking starting points on Parnassus, you'll need a car or a taxi. On weekends during ski season, parking spaces on the main road are scarce.

In antiquity the Sanctuary of Apollo and its oracle was one of the most important cult centres in Greece; today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sacred Way leads past treasuries to the Temple of Apollo, with the theatre and stadium above, overlooking the Pleistos valley. The museum holds the bronze Charioteer of Delphi. Come early in the morning or late in the afternoon and wear sturdy shoes, as the site is steep and uneven.

    Galaxidi is a small port town on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth, about 30 kilometers southwest of Delphi. In the 19th century, it was one of Greece's most important shipping towns, and in the 1860s and 1870s, its merchant fleet comprised over 400 sailing ships. The stone captain's houses from this period still define the townscape today.You come to Galaxidi for a quiet evening at the harbor after visiting Delphi, for the Maritime Museum, and for walks between the two harbors and through the pine forest opposite. On Kathara Deftera, Clean Monday at the beginning of Orthodox Lent, the flour battle Alevromoutzouroma attracts many visitors.

    At **Thermopylae**, in 480 BC, a Greek force under the Spartan King Leonidas held back Xerxes' Persian army for three days. Back then, a narrow coastal pass ran here between the Kallidromo Mountains and the sea; today, due to the Spercheios River's deposits, the coast is several kilometers away.Little remains of the pass itself on the terrain. Visitors who stop here will see the Leonidas Monument, the Kolonos Hill (site of the last stand), and the information center explaining the vanished landscape. The stop is easily integrated into a trip between Athens and Northern Greece.
