Cefalù's history dates back to antiquity, when the Greeks founded the settlement of Cephaloedium. Later ruled by Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs, the city experienced its most significant flourishing under the Normans in the 12th century. King Roger II of Sicily chose Cefalù as the site for a majestic construction project that still dominates the cityscape today.The most outstanding testament to this era is the Cefalù Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This masterpiece of Arab-Norman architecture impresses with its massive twin towers and the extraordinary Byzantine mosaics in the interior, especially the Pantokrator depiction in the apse. Besides the Cathedral, the medieval laundry, the “Lavatoio Medievale,” and the remains of the megalithic walls also bear witness to the city's long and multifaceted past.Cefalù's cultural identity is also strongly shaped by its seaside location. Traditions associated with fishing and maritime festivals play an important role in local life. The solemn procession of the Santissimo Salvatore, the city's patron saint, is an annual highlight that reflects deep religious roots and the community's cohesion.

In Cefalù, the best way to get around is on foot, especially within the picturesque historic center. This area is mostly car-free and invites leisurely strolls with its narrow streets, charming squares, and waterfront promenade, making it extremely pedestrian-friendly.There is no metro or tram system here. For longer distances or to reach the train station and surrounding neighborhoods, local bus lines are available; tickets can often be purchased directly from the driver or in tobacco shops (Tabaccherie). For excursions along the coast or into the hilly hinterland, bicycles and e-scooters are ideal, which can be rented at various locations and allow for flexible exploration.While taxis are available, they can be costly for short distances, and ride-sharing services are hardly widespread in this region.
