    The Triumphal Arch on the north side of Praça do Comércio was completed in 1875 and commemorates the reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. Figures of Vasco da Gama and Marquês de Pombal adorn it; the inscription reads “Virtutibus Maiorum”. An elevator and a short staircase lead to the viewing platform with views over the Baixa and the Tejo.

    The large square by the Tagus stood opposite the Royal Palace until 1755, which is why it is also known as Terreiro do Paço. Yellow arcaded buildings frame it on three sides, and in the center stands the equestrian statue of King José I. Steps lead down to the Cais das Colunas by the river, where ships once docked.

    The central square of the Lower Town is paved with limestone in a wave pattern, designed to evoke the sea. Two bronze fountains and a column with the statue of King Pedro IV stand in the middle, while on the north side is the Dona Maria II National Theatre. Right next to it lies the Neo-Manueline Rossio train station, the departure point for trains to Sintra.

    Reconstruction after 1755The earthquake on November 1, 1755, the subsequent tsunami, and the fires almost completely destroyed the medieval lower town. Minister Marquês de Pombal had it rebuilt according to the plans of engineers Eugénio dos Santos and Manuel da Maia. A wooden framework, known as the *gaiola pombalina*, was incorporated into the buildings, designed to yield during tremors.Squares and Traditional ShopsBefore the earthquake, Praça do Comércio was the site of the Royal Palace, while Rossio has been the city's central square since the Middle Ages. In the Baixa, traditional shops such as glove makers, confectioneries, and sardine shops have survived; however, chain stores and souvenir shops also characterize the main streets.

    Tiny standing bar on Largo de São Domingos next to Rossio, serving only Ginjinha, the Lisbon sour cherry liqueur, since the 19th century. Order “com” or “sem”, with or without cherries in the glass; drunk outside on the square.

    Central and FlatThe Baixa is the old town's transport hub. Metro stations are located at Rossio, Restauradores, Baixa-Chiado, and Terreiro do Paço. From Praça da Figueira, Tram 15 goes to Belém, and from Martim Moniz, Tram 28 travels through the old town. Rossio Station is the starting point for trains to Sintra, and Cais do Sodré Station on the western edge serves the line to Cascais.All destinations in Baixa are reachable on foot in just a few minutes.The Elevador de Santa Justa and lifts on Rua dos Fanqueiros connect the lower town with Chiado and the castle hill.Many street vendors operate on Rua Augusta; what is offered as drugs is usually bay leaf or flour.
