Originally opened in 1966 as the Ponte Salazar, it was renamed after the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, and has since symbolized Portugal's liberation from dictatorship. The Igreja de Santa Engrácia, today known as Panteão Nacional, is an impressive example of Baroque architecture in Lisbon. Its construction history is remarkable: Begun in the 17th century, it was only completed in 1966, giving rise to the Portuguese expression “obras de Santa Engrácia” for endlessly long construction projects. Inside, you'll find the tombs of important Portuguese personalities, including presidents, writers, and the famous Fado singer Amália Rodrigues.
