    The Athletic Club Museoa and the tour of the San Mamés stadium offer you insight into one of Spain's most traditional football clubs. Athletic Bilbao traditionally only fields players who originate from or were trained in the Basque Country, and is therefore considered a symbol of Basque identity. In the museum, you'll learn more about the history of the club and Basque football. The stadium tour typically leads you through the players' tunnel, changing rooms, and press room, all the way to the pitch side of the stadium, which fans call “La Catedral”. On match days, these areas are closed. Practical tip: Book your tickets online in advance, especially for weekends.

    Jeff Koons' sculpture "Puppy" has stood in front of the Guggenheim Museum since 1997 and is a landmark of Bilbao. The 12.4-meter-tall West Highland White Terrier consists of a steel structure planted with thousands of living flowers. Originally created in 1992 for an exhibition in Germany, the artwork permanently moved to Bilbao for the museum's opening. The planting is changed twice a year, so its appearance alters with the seasons. Our tip: It's quieter here in the early morning. You'll get a great overall view with the Guggenheim in the background from the opposite bank of the Ría.

    The Bihotz Sakratuaren eliza, Spanish Iglesia del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, is a neo-Gothic church in Bilbao's Ensanche district. It was built according to the plans of architect José María de Basterra; construction began in 1889, and opened as early as 1890. The towers were added later, but their original pointed spires no longer exist today. The church is an example of late 19th-century sacred architecture in the city. Our Tip: In the morning, light streams through the stained-glass windows into the interior.

    The Church of San Vicente Mártir de Abando is among the oldest sacred buildings in present-day Bilbao. The current structure dates to the 16th century, blending Gothic and Renaissance elements. The interior is a hall church with three equally high naves, round columns, and Gothic rib vaults. The neo-Baroque bell tower on the facade was added in 1894 following plans by José María de Basterra.The church was the parish church of the former municipality of Abando, which was incorporated into Bilbao in two stages in 1870 and 1890, and is thus a testament to the city's development. Our Tip: In the morning, just after opening, you can peacefully admire the architecture.

    Bilbao: Art, Culture and History

    Bilbao, long a center of Basque industry, has transformed from a medieval trading port into a modern cultural city. Founded in 1300, the city experienced a boom through iron ore trade and shipbuilding, which significantly shaped its development. Its architecture speaks of tradition and modern design.The spectrum ranges from the winding Casco Viejo with the Gothic Santiago Cathedral to the stately townhouses on Gran Vía in Ensanche, the late 19th-century urban expansion. A turning point was the opening of Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in 1997, which established Bilbao internationally as a destination for contemporary architecture and art. Structures like Santiago Calatrava's Zubizuri Bridge or César Pelli's Iberdrola Tower underscore this transformation.Culturally, Bilbao is rooted in Basque identity, evident in the preservation of the Euskera language and numerous traditions. The Pintxo culture is a central part of social life. Important cultural institutions alongside the Guggenheim include the Museo de Bellas Artes with an extensive collection of classical and modern art, as well as the Arriaga Theatre. The annual Aste Nagusia (Great Week) in August is a celebration of Basque culture with music, dance, and sports.

    Bilbao is easy to explore thanks to its excellent transport network and compact size. Its backbone is Metro Bilbao, which quickly connects the main city districts. It is complemented by Bilbobus and Bizkaibus buses and the Euskotren tram, which runs from Abando station along the Ría towards the Guggenheim. For the Metro, tram, and buses, the rechargeable Barik card is recommended, available at Metro stations and tobacco shops.Taxis are readily available, and ride-hailing apps like Uber and Cabify are also offered. The city is also very pedestrian-friendly; the city center and Old Town are easy to explore on foot, as many attractions are close to each other. The lower station of the Funicular de Artxanda is about a ten-minute walk from Casco Viejo.
