Romanesque buildings such as the churches of San Pedro de la Rúa and San Miguel, the Palace of the Kings of Navarre, the Puente de la Cárcel over the Ega, and narrow streets bear witness to this tradition.

    Above the Church of San Pedro de la Rúa stood the castles that protected Estella in the Middle Ages. After the conquest of Navarre by Castile, the castle complex was demolished in 1572, with only remnants surviving. The town developed in the 11th century when Sancho Ramírez founded a settlement here in 1090 for Frankish merchants and St. James pilgrims.

    The palace on Plaza de San Martín was built in the second half of the 12th century and is the only surviving Romanesque secular building in Navarra. On the facade, a relief depicts Roland's battle against the giant Ferragut. Since 1991, the building has housed the Museo Gustavo de Maeztu, featuring works by the Basque painter.

    Opposite the Royal Palace, a flight of steps ascends to this church, first mentioned as a parish in 1174. The portal is adorned with sirens, centaurs, harpies, and griffins. Of the Romanesque cloister dating from around 1170, two wings with significant capitals are preserved; the others were lost when the castle was demolished in 1572.

    The former Benedictine monastery of Santa María la Real is located on the Camino de Santiago near Ayegui, at the foot of Montejurra. The 12th-century abbey church features a Romanesque apse, while the 16th-century cloister is designed in the Plateresque style. A university operated here from 1569 to 1824. Adjacent to the monastery, a fountain from Bodegas Irache offers pilgrims wine instead of water.
