    Llanes is a coastal town in eastern Asturias that combines maritime history with nature. Here you will find a well-preserved old town with the largest surviving section of medieval town wall in Asturias and a round 13th-century torreón.

    Llanes is a coastal town in eastern Asturias that combines maritime history with nature. Here you will find a well-preserved old town with the largest surviving section of medieval town wall in Asturias and a round 13th-century torreón. In the harbour, between 2001 and 2006 Agustín Ibarrola painted the concrete blocks of the breakwater into the colourful installation Cubos de la Memoria. Along the coast lie special beaches such as Playa de Toró with its pointed rocks and Playa de Gulpiyuri, a small beach about 100 metres inland that the sea fills with water through underground passages in the karst. The Paseo de San Pedro above the town offers wide views of the harbour, the coast and the Sierra del Cuera. In late spring or early autumn it is mild and less crowded. On a stroll through the old town you will see traditional architecture, buildings by returnees from the Americas such as the 1910 Casino, and sidrerías (cider houses).

    Under the town charter granted to Llanes by King Alfonso IX of León, the town was fully walled. Sections of the wall and the massive 13th-century round tower remain, now adjoined by the 1910 Casino. The remains of the old town gates mark the old town's edge.

    The path runs on a grassy promontory above the town, near the harbor and El Sablón beach. From here, you see Llanes, the coast east and west, and the Sierra del Cuera. It's part of the municipality's coastal trail.

    3Cubos de la Memoria

    Basque artist Agustín Ibarrola began painting the concrete blocks of Llanes' harbour wall in 2001; the second phase was completed in 2003. The 66 colourful cubes each weigh around 60 tons and incorporate symbols from the region's prehistory, landscape, and culture. The best view of the work is from the promenade on the breakwater.

    The citizens of Llanes began constructing the church from 1240, with works continuing into the 14th and 15th centuries. It is one of the few Gothic buildings in Asturias, featuring three naves and two Romanesque portals. Since 1973, it has held the title of Basilica minor.

    West of Llanes, during strong surf and high tide, the sea forces water through crevices in the limestone, which then shoots upwards like a fountain. This spectacle is accompanied by a deep rumble. Whether the Bufones are active largely depends on the sea swell and tides.

    North of Naves, this small sandy beach lies in meadows, about 100 meters from the coast. Formed in a doline, seawater flows in through a limestone cave, so tides are noticeable. Gulpiyuri, a natural monument since 2001, is only accessible on foot.
