    Copper and Diamonds

    Port Nolloth was established in the mid-19th century as a port for copper from the mines around Okiep and named after naval officer M. S. Nolloth, who had surveyed the coast. A narrow-gauge railway brought the ore to the coast. In the 20th century, diamond mining followed along the coast and offshore. The population has roots among the Nama and European settlers.

    Traveling

    You can only reach Port Nolloth by car, from Springbok via the R382. In town, you get around on foot. For excursions along the coast and into the Richtersveld, you'll need your own vehicle, preferably an off-road one.

    Namaqualand is a barren semi-desert in northwestern South Africa between the Atlantic Ocean and the border to Namibia, about five hours' drive north of Cape Town. Following sufficient winter rains, the landscape transforms in spring, usually from mid-August to mid-September, into a sea of orange, yellow, and white wildflowers.

    Paternoster is a small fishing village on the West Coast, about two hours' drive north of Cape Town. Whitewashed cottages, colourful fishing boats on the beach, and the cold Atlantic Ocean define its scenery. The village is known for fresh fish, crayfish, and several excellent restaurants.
