    Khon Kaen, centrally located in Isan, is an administrative, economic, and university city. Its large university shapes the cityscape: with more cafés, bookstores, and evening venues than in comparable provincial towns, and the city serves many travelers as a convenient stopover on their journey through the region.The landmark is Wat Nong Wang on the shore of Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake: a nine-story pagoda whose floors house museum rooms on the city's history, offering panoramic views from the top gallery. The lake itself features a circular path, popular with strollers in the evenings.The city's National Museum displays finds from Isan, including objects from the Dvaravati period and prehistoric pottery. The province is known for Mudmee silk, an Ikat weaving technique primarily practiced in Chonnabot district.On weekends, a central street transforms into a pedestrian zone with stalls offering Isan cuisine and handicrafts. The cooler dry season from November to February is particularly pleasant.

    1Phra Mahathat Kaen Nakhon

    The nine-story Chedi stands within the grounds of Wat Nong Wang on the south bank of Bueng Kaen Nakhon, a landmark of the city. The building follows the Isan style; inside, stairs ascend over multiple levels featuring murals and exhibits on Khon Kaen's history. From the upper viewing platform, you overlook the lake and the city. As it is an active temple, please cover shoulders and knees.

    2Bueng Kaen Nakhon

    The lake in the middle of the city, with a multi-kilometer circular path along its shore. In the late afternoon, residents jog and cycle here, with sports fields, shrines, and food stalls interspersed. On the south side stands the nine-story pagoda of Wat Nong Wang.

    Kai Yang und Sai Krok Isan

    Mariniertes Grillhähnchen und kurze, fermentierte Reiswürste vom Holzkohlerost. An Märkten und an der Walking Street die häufigste Kombination, dazu Kohl und rohe Chilis.

    Pho und vietnamesische Küche

    Durch die Nähe zu Laos und Vietnam gibt es im Isan eine eigene vietnamesische Tradition — Pho, Sommerrollen, Nam Nueang. Mild gewürzt und eine gute Pause von Chili und Pla Ra.

    Klebreis

    Im Bambuskörbchen gedampft und mit der Hand zu Kugeln geformt. Im Isan Hauptnahrungsmittel und nicht Beilage; zu Dips, Salaten und Grillfleisch gehört er immer.

    Cafészene rund um die Universität

    Zwischen Campus und Zentrum liegen viele unabhängige Cafés, die Röstkaffee aus thailändischem Anbau ausschenken. Sie öffnen früh, haben WLAN und sind der praktischste Arbeitsplatz in der Stadt.

    Culture and History

    Khon Kaen was founded in 1783 by settlers led by Ratchakhru Luang and elevated to city status in 1797 under Rama I. For a long time, it remained a small administrative town; only the railway line and the Mittraphap highway transformed it into a hub in the 20th century. In 1964, the university was added as part of state programs for the development of the Northeast.Isan, a language related to Laotian, is spoken; the music is Mor Lam and Luk Thung. The local diet includes sticky rice with papaya salad and grilled meat. Many families have relatives working in Bangkok or abroad.The most famous craft is Mudmee silk, an Ikat technique where threads are tied before dyeing. The center of weaving is Chonnabot district. Every year, the city hosts a Silk Festival.As a university city, Khon Kaen has galleries, concerts, and independent cafés, which are otherwise rare in Isan.

    Khon Kaen's nightlife offers a diverse selection, primarily concentrated around the university area and central locations. You'll find both relaxed bars for a drink and livelier venues with live music, such as NOIR Eatery & Music Bar. Popular spots like Keynm Bar invite you for a sociable evening.

    Exploring locally

    The city is sprawling and flat. You can walk well around Bueng Kaen Nakhon lake; otherwise, you'll need transport.Songthaews operate on numbered routes; ask for the number and direction. Motorcycle taxis, tuk-tuks, and ride-hailing apps are also available. Rental cars and scooters can be found at the airport and in the city centre.The railway line from Bangkok to Nong Khai stops here, buses run in all directions within Isan, and the airport has several daily flights from Bangkok.Chonnabot is about 55 kilometres to the southwest, with regular buses towards Ban Phai.     Isan is Thailand's Northeast and the country's largest region: a vast, agricultural plateau bordered by the Mekong to the north and east. Touristically, it is less developed than the coasts and the north, and you'll less often get by with English.Culturally, the region is close to Laos.     The Nam Nao National Park straddles the border of Phetchabun and Chaiyaphum provinces. Established in 1972, it covers approximately 970 square kilometers. Its highland terrain features a mix of pine forests, dry and mountain forests, and grasslands, giving the park a distinct character compared to the tropical parks in the south.Among its inhabitants are wild elephants, gaur, bantengs, and Sambar deer, plus around 360 bird species. Trails lead to viewpoints, waterfalls such as Haew Sai, and caves. The highest point is Phu Pha Chit, at 1,271 meters.Route 12, connecting Lom Sak and Chum Phae, passes through the park, ensuring easy access. The park headquarters offers bungalows and a campsite. Nights can get noticeably cool, particularly in December and January.

    Phimai Historical Park

    The Phimai Historical Park in Nakhon Ratchasima Province encompasses the grand Khmer temple complex Prasat Hin Phimai. The main prang was begun around 1080 under King Jayavarman VI, with additions made in the 13th century. Unlike most Khmer temples, Phimai was dedicated to Mahayana Buddhism from the outset.The main prang, built of light sandstone, stands within a rectangular walled enclosure with four gateways. The complex opens to the south, towards the old Royal Road to Angkor. Lintels and pediments display Buddhist and Hindu motifs.The complex is located in the heart of Phimai town and is easily accessible on foot, while the National Museum showcases sculptures and lintels from the region. On the outskirts of town is the Banyan Grove Sai Ngam, with food stalls by the water. Phimai is a day trip from Nakhon Ratchasima.
    Nong Khai

    Nong Khai is located on the Mekong, opposite Laos, with the Laotian capital Vientiane about 25 kilometers upstream. The First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge connects both countries by road and rail. The main attraction is the Sala Kaew Ku sculpture park, featuring some figures over 20 meters tall. Around the full moon in October, the so-called Naga fireballs can be observed on the river.
