    The Town Church on Kirkestræde was built from 1756 to 1758 on the site of a medieval church. The 13th-century baptismal font comes from the previous structure; the pulpit dates from 1634. The floral motifs of the wall paintings were added during a restoration around 1950.

    Captain's Town in the ArchipelagoÆrøskøbing flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries through seafaring; wealthy skippers and merchants built the houses that still define the townscape today. As the town later stagnated economically, little was demolished or modernized, preserving the ensemble.Small museums recall the maritime past, including the collection of ships-in-bottles by the seaman Flaske-Peter.

    Exploring locally

    The car ferry from Svendborg takes about 75 minutes to Ærøskøbing; further ferries connect Faaborg and Fynshav on Alsen with Søby in the north of the island. All tickets must be booked and paid for in advance, even for pedestrians.The old town is small and best experienced on foot. On Ærø, buses are free year-round, connecting Ærøskøbing with Marstal, Søby, and the ferry ports. The flat to hilly island is well-suited for cycling.
