    Thy National Park stretches as a narrow strip along the North Sea, from Hanstholm in the north to Agger Tange in the south. Here you'll find dunes, heathland, pine plantations, clear lakes, and wide beaches, interspersed with small fishing villages like Klitmøller and Nørre Vorupør. It was established in 2008 as Denmark's first national park.

    Cold Hawaii (Klitmøller)

    The North Sea village is Cold Hawaii, the hub of the Danish surf scene. Surf schools, rentals, and cafés are on the beach; beginners can book courses here. Even without a board, the view of the surf from the dune is worth it.

    The 35-meter-high stone lighthouse was built in 1883 and stands in the middle of the dune heath in the south of the National Park. It is accessible, with a National Park visitor centre nearby. Marked paths lead through the dunes to the beach in about 20 minutes.

    Historic landing place with white fishing huts, where boats were once pulled directly from the beach into the sea. Today, it is a National Park visitor centre with a small exhibition. Hiking trails through the dunes begin here.

    Two clear lakes on the eastern edge of the National Park, surrounded by forest and heathland. At Nors Sø, there is a shallow bathing spot, ideal for children. Circular paths lead along the shore; cattle and horses graze on some pastures.

    Self-service restaurant at the landing place of Nørre Vorupør, right next to the fishing boats on the beach. Large portions with fish cakes, fish platters, and crabs, plus local beers and ice cream.

    Dining & Drinks

    No dining facilities are available within the park. Eat in Thisted, Klitmøller or Hanstholm, and the region offers two worthwhile specialties.

    Fish in Vorupør

    At Nørre Vorupør's landing place, you can find fish cakes and fish platters right next to the fishing boats on the beach.

    Limfjord Oysters

    Oysters and mussels come from the Limfjord south of the park. During the colder season, guided foraging tours are offered.

    Cafés in Klitmøller

    The surf town has several cafés and small eateries with breakfast, coffee, and cake. Younger and more international than the region.

    Culture and History

    For centuries, the people in Thy fought against the shifting sands that buried fields and farms. From the 19th century onwards, dunes were fortified with marram grass and pine plantations were established, which now shape the inland landscape. Many farmers became fishermen, pulling their boats into the sea from the beach, as is still done today in Vorupør.During World War II, the occupying power built one of the largest batteries of the Atlantic Wall near Hanstholm, today a museum. More recently, Klitmøller's surf scene has made the name Cold Hawaii famous.

    On Tour in the National Park

    You reach Thisted by train via Struer. From there, buses go to Klitmøller, Vorupør, and Hanstholm, but services elsewhere are sparse. You're most flexible by car or bike; the North Sea Cycle Route runs through the park. Parking is at the starting points; within the area, you walk.

    Løkken is one of the best-known seaside resorts on Jutland's North Sea coast. Its wide sandy beach with white bathing houses stretches for miles, and cars are allowed on the sand. In summer, the town is crowded and lively; outside the season, it is quiet. Fishing cutters are still pulled directly onto the beach today.
