    The Architecture and Design Center on Limfjord is the last building by Jørn Utzon, the architect of the Sydney Opera House. It was completed in 2008, the year of the architect's death. Utzon grew up in Aalborg. Changing exhibitions on architecture and design, plus a restaurant with water views.

    Lindholm Høje

    The burial ground on the hill north of the Limfjord was in use from approximately 400 to 1000 AD. Around 700 graves are marked with stone settings, many in the shape of ships. Drifting sand covered the site for centuries. The grounds are freely accessible, and the museum explains the finds.

    The half-timbered castle on the Limfjord was built by Christian III in the 16th century to serve as a seat for his liegemen. Today, the building is used by the administration and is not open for internal visits. The castle courtyard and rampart are freely accessible and well worth a short tour.

    Jomfru Ane Gade

    The short central lane is Denmark's famed nightlife hub; bars and pubs abound. Quiet by day, it's packed from late evening, especially weekends.

    Limfjord Harbourfront

    Restaurants with terraces have opened on the redesigned fjord waterfront, with the Utzon Center nestled in between. In summer, it's the most pleasant place in the city for a long dinner.

    Aalborg Akvavit

    The city gave its name to the clear herbal schnapps, traditionally enjoyed with herring and smørrebrød. Many establishments naturally feature a selection of these on their menu.

    Culture and History

    Aalborg was granted city rights in the 14th century, becoming prosperous in the 16th and 17th centuries through the herring trade. Merchant houses like Jens Bangs Stenhus and the half-timbered Aalborghus Castle date from this period. Budolfi Kirke has served as the cathedral since 1554.In the 20th century, shipyards, cement factories, and a schnapps distillery characterized the city. Today, the Utzon Center, by Aalborg-raised Jørn Utzon, and the concert hall Musikkens Hus stand by the fjord. Every May, the city celebrates a large carnival.

    Aalborg's nightlife offers a diverse mix, heavily influenced by its university. Here you'll find a range of student hotspots like Studenterhuset to live music venues like Rocken, especially concentrated around Jomfru Ane Gade.
