For those who don't just pass through, there's the North Sea Aquarium, a lighthouse with a view, and a large bunker complex nestled in the dunes.

    The North Sea Aquarium showcases life in the North Sea in over 70 tanks, including an ocean tank with 4.5 million liters of water, a seal tank, and a touch pool. Daily, a diver feeds sharks, rays, and schools of fish in the large tank. Outside, there's a playground; allow half a day.

    German WWII bunker complex in the dunes around the lighthouse, with dozens of bunkers, some you can enter. Paths are freely accessible, and info boards explain the site. Some furnished bunkers have an entry fee or are only open with a guided tour.

    Hirtshals: Port, Lighthouse and Oceanarium

    A tour of the port town at Jutland's northern tip, from the church, across the harbour, up to the lighthouse with its bunkers, and back to the Nordsøen Oceanarium. The route is about five kilometres long. Without an aquarium visit, allow about two hours.

    Hirtshals is a fishing port, and you can taste it. The selection is down-to-earth and concentrates on the harbor area.

    Around the harbor basin are snack bars with plaice, fish platters, and fish and chips, often with waterside terraces. Ideal before or after the ferry.

    Fish Auction

    At the port, the catch continues to be landed and auctioned. Early in the morning, it's busiest.

    Local amenities

    The center has supermarkets, bakeries and simple restaurants. For upscale dining, head to Lønstrup or Skagen.

    Culture and History

    Until the 20th century, Hirtshals was a small fishing village. With the construction of the harbour starting in 1919, the town developed into one of Denmark's most important fishing and ferry ports.During World War II, the German occupiers expanded the coast as part of the Atlantic Wall. The bunkers around the lighthouse are now accessible as an open-air museum.

    A local train connects Hirtshals with Hjørring, with connections to trains for Aalborg and Frederikshavn. You can explore the center on foot; the lighthouse and aquarium are each around 20 minutes away. For the beaches and the coast towards Lønstrup, a bike or car is practical.

    On North Jutland's North Sea coast, the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse sits on a 60m cliff amid a migrating dune. Due to sea erosion, the tower was relocated roughly 70 meters inland in 2019. Up top, enjoy wide views of the dune and North Sea.
