In summer, the town is crowded and lively; outside the season, it is quiet. Fishing cutters are still pulled directly onto the beach today.

    The wide sandy beach stretches for miles to the north and south, and cars are allowed to drive on the firm sand. In front of the town stand the white bathhouses, and further out lie bunkers of the Atlantic Wall, which the sea gradually erodes. With normal cars, do not drive too close to the water, as the sand becomes soft there.

    Løkken thrives on summer, and it shows. Choices are vast, but seasonal: What's packed in July is shut in November.

    Søndergade

    The main street to the beach is, in summer, lined with ice cream parlors, snack bars, pizzerias, and bars. Casual and loud, with a strong emphasis on a young crowd.

    Beach kiosks

    At the beach access, kiosks sell fries, soft serve, and hot dogs, which in Denmark are served with crispy onions and pickle slices. The classic end to a beach day.

    Fish from the Neighborhood

    Fish comes from the surrounding ports, especially from Hirtshals. Several local eateries have fried plaice and Krabbensmørrebrød on the menu, often with a terrace facing the dunes.

    Culture and History

    Løkken never had a harbour. Goods and catches were landed directly on the beach; fishermen still pull their boats onto the sand today. From the late 19th century, the town became a seaside resort; the bathing hotel on the market square dates from that time.The white beach huts have been part of the town's image for generations; their history is told in the small museum. During the Second World War, German occupiers built bunkers along the coast; some are now in the water.

    On the Way in Løkken

    Buses connect Løkken with Hjørring and Aalborg. Within the town, you can walk, everything is close by. You can drive your car onto the firm beach, but don't take normal cars too close to the water, where the sand gets soft. A bicycle is ideal for the coast and the inland plantations.
