    At the lighthouse itself, there's nothing but sand and wind. You can get provisions in Lønstrup or along the coast.

    The neighboring town offers bakeries, ice cream parlors, and several restaurants, open until late in summer. Fish and Smørrebrød are featured on most menus.

    In the surrounding ports, especially in Hirtshals and Løkken, fresh catch is sold and smoked directly. Crabs and plaice are available there, bypassing the restaurants.

    Provisions for the ascent

    A good 20-minute walk through deep sand leads to the tower; at the top, there's no shade or water. Bring drinks, especially on calm summer days.

    A lighthouse between sand and sea

    The Rubjerg Knude lighthouse went into operation in 1900 and at that time stood approximately 200 meters from the cliff edge on open ground. What happened next is a story of two opposing forces: from the west, the sea gnawed at the steep coast, while from the east, drift sand pushed a migrating dune closer.The sand won first. It accumulated so high around the buildings that the light was obscured from the 1960s onwards. Operations ceased in 1968. A museum in the outbuildings lasted until 2002, then it also gave up, and the complex was left to the sand. At times, only the tower protruded from the dune.Then the sea caught up. When the edge had approached to within a few meters, the tower was placed on rails in October 2019 and moved 70 meters inland. The operation lasted one day and, according to estimates by those involved, afforded the structure about 40 more years. After that, the same decision will again be pending.

    Rubjerg Knude is secluded, a car is practically a prerequisite. Parking is available on Rubjergvej and Fyrvejen between Lønstrup and Løkken; smaller car parks can be found near Mårup Kirke. From there, the journey continues only on foot.The path to the lighthouse leads for about a kilometre through the shifting dunes. Deep sand, no paved surface, not feasible with prams or wheelchairs. Sturdy footwear helps; sandals will immediately fill with sand.Once at the top, you'll stand about 60 metres above the sea on an open cliff edge. The wind there is almost always strong and carries sand, which can become unpleasant in strong gusts. Keep your distance from the cliff edge; it is not secured and regularly erodes further.
