Kuranda
Village in the rainforest above Cairns, accessible by the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway through the Barron Gorge or by the Skyrail cableway over the canopy. The village features markets, a butterfly sanctuary, and Aboriginal art.
Mossman Gorge
Gorge in the south of Daintree National Park with a clear river between granite boulders and rainforest trails. From the visitor centre, a shuttle bus takes guests to the gorge, where the Kuku Yalanji offer guided Dreamtime Walks.
Great Barrier Reef
The world's largest coral reef system spans approx. 2,300 km along Queensland's coast. Day tours from Cairns and Port Douglas visit outer reefs and coral islands, with snorkeling, diving, and glass-bottom boats. The reef has long suffered from coral bleaching; eco-certified operators aid monitoring and protection.

Culture & History
Rainforest CulturesThe region is home to many Aboriginal groups, including the Kuku Yalanji in Daintree, the Yidinji and Gimuy Walubara Yidinji around Cairns, and the Djabugay near Kuranda. Some offer their own tours, such as the Dreamtime Walks at Mossman Gorge. Off the coast lie the islands of the Torres Strait Islander people, whose art can be seen in galleries in Cairns.Gold, Sugar, and TourismCairns was founded in 1876 as a port for the goldfields in the hinterland; later, sugarcane and tropical fruits shaped the economy. Since the 1980s, tourism, centered around the reef and rainforest, has been the most important economic sector.
Discovering the Region
Cairns Airport has national and some international connections. From there, well-maintained roads lead to Port Douglas (approx. 70 km) and the Tablelands.Captain Cook Highway: This coastal road to Port Douglas is considered one of Queensland's most scenic routes.Daintree River: Only a cable ferry crosses the river; north of it, roads become narrow and winding.Jellyfish: From about October to May, box jellyfish and Irukandji may be present; only swim in nets or with a stinger suit then.Crocodiles: Saltwater crocodiles live in rivers and mangroves; observe warning signs.
