    4NapoRama

    The NapoRama is a small museum in Ajaccio's Old Town, recounting the life of Napoleon Bonaparte with miniature figures. Across over 20 dioramas, more than 800 hand-painted Playmobil figures recreate scenes, from his birth in Ajaccio in 1769 and the Egyptian campaign to his imperial coronation in 1804. It's an entertaining introduction, especially for families with children, and can be easily combined with the Maison Bonaparte. Our tip: Allow about half an hour; it's usually closed on Sundays and Mondays.

    Corsican cuisine comes from the mountains, not the sea: free-range pork, sheep and goat cheese, chestnuts, and maquis herbs. Fish is added in the port towns.

    Corsican Charcuterie

    Semi-wild pigs yield Coppa, Lonzu, and Prizuttu. The finest pieces are PDO-protected and served thinly sliced as a starter.

    Brocciu

    The fresh cheese made from sheep or goat whey is the base for many dishes, from stuffed vegetables to Fiadone cheesecake. It is only produced between autumn and early summer.

    Chestnut flour

    In the Castaéniccia region, chestnuts replaced grain for centuries. From this flour, polenta, cakes, and beer are made.

    Ajaccio's history is deeply connected to its location on the Gulf of Ajaccio. Traces of settlement date back to antiquity, yet the Genoese founded today's city in 1492 as a fortified site, forming the Old Town's foundation and making Ajaccio a vital trading post.Its architecture reflects this Genoese past: narrow streets, colorful facades, and the citadel characterize the historic center. French influences appear mainly in 19th-century larger squares and boulevards. Napoleon Bonaparte, born here in 1769, is a central figure in the city's history. His birthplace, the Maison Bonaparte, is now a national museum.Like all of Corsica, Ajaccio maintains a strong, distinct identity. This is evident in the Corsican language (Corsu), traditional music—especially polyphonic singing—and religious festivals and processions, such as the Good Friday procession.

    Exploring locally

    You best explore the Old Town and port on foot. There is no tram; the Muvistrada bus network connects the center with the districts and the beaches along the Route des Sanguinaires. Tickets are available from the driver or at sales points. Taxis can be found at taxi stands or by phone.Ajaccio Napoleon Bonaparte Airport is connected to the center by bus. From the ferry port, you can reach the Old Town on foot; the Chemins de fer de la Corse train station is right next to it, with connections to Corte and Bastia.

It lies at the end of the Gulf of Porto, which a Genoese watchtower on a rock above the river mouth overlooks. The Gulf, with the Calanques de Piana, the Bay of Girolata, and the Scandola Nature Reserve, has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983.Boat trips depart from the harbor along red porphyry cliffs to Scandola and Girolata, accessible only by water or on foot. Inland, hiking trails lead through the Spelunca Gorge; the Piana coastal road is deemed one of the island's most striking.

    The Vallée de la Restonica stretches about 15 kilometers into the mountains from Corte. The Restonica River has cut into the granite, forming clear pools, surrounded by Laricio pines. The destination for most hikers are the glacial lakes Lac de Melo (approx. 1,700 m) and Lac de Capitello (approx. 1,900 m) at the head of the valley. Important: Since the storms of November 2023, the road above Tragone has been destroyed and closed to cars; the former starting point at the Bergeries de Grotelle is now only accessible on foot, extending the tour by more than two hours. Sturdy shoes and good fitness are required. In the lower valley, there are shorter walks and swimming spots by the river.

    Corte lies in the mountainous heart of Corsica, at the confluence of Tavignano and Restonica. Above the town, the citadel rises on a steep rock. From 1755 to 1769, under Pasquale Paoli, Corte was the capital of the independent Corsican Republic and is still considered the island's historical center.The Università di Corsica, the island's only university, gives the small town a youthful feel. In the citadel, the Museu di a Corsica showcases the island's folk culture. Corte is also a starting point for hikes into the gorges of Restonica and Tavignano and lies on the railway line between Bastia and Ajaccio.
