Ajaccio's history is inextricably linked to its strategic location on the Gulf of Ajaccio and dates back to antiquity, although the city in its current form was largely shaped by the Genoese Republic. In the 15th century, the Genoese founded a fortified settlement, which formed the foundation of the Old Town and made Ajaccio an important trading post.Ajaccio's architecture bears significant witness to this Genoese past: narrow, winding streets, colorful facades, and the impressive citadel are characteristic of the historic center. Later French influences are also visible, particularly in the larger squares and boulevards from the 19th century. A central element of the city's history is Napoleon Bonaparte, who was born here in 1769. His birthplace, the Maison Bonaparte, is now a national museum and a significant attraction.Culturally, Ajaccio, like all of Corsica, preserves a strong distinct identity. This manifests in the preservation of the Corsican language (Corsu), traditional music – especially polyphonic singing – and the deep-rooted history and pride in their autonomy. The Muvistrada route network reliably connects the city center with surrounding neighborhoods and popular beaches; tickets can be purchased directly from the driver or at designated sales points, and multi-journey tickets are worthwhile for longer stays.The charming Old Town and the port area are excellent for exploring on foot, making Ajaccio a very pedestrian-friendly city.
