The small Musée du Patrimoine des Écoles is located in Amfreville-la-Mivoie, a southeastern suburb of Rouen, and preserves the history of village schools. Across two rooms, it displays showcases with old school materials, class photos, and a recreated classroom with teaching aids, notebooks, and textbooks from the late 19th century up to the 1960s. Our Tip: Admission is free, but opening hours are very limited; it's best to arrange an appointment in advance.

From Côte Sainte-Catherine, a chalk hill east of the center, you'll find one of Rouen's most iconic views. You overlook the old town with Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Seine, and the surrounding landscape. Claude Monet painted a panoramic city view from here in 1892. From above, it's clear how densely built the old town is and how Rouen lies nestled in the river bend. Our tip: The light is best early morning and late afternoon. The walk is steep but takes about half an hour; alternatively, drive.

The Musée Le Secq des Tournelles in Rouen houses one of the world's most significant collections of wrought iron art. You'll find it in the former Gothic church of Saint-Laurent, whose impressive architecture itself provides a fitting setting for the exhibits. The collection was amassed in the 19th century by Henri Le Secq des Tournelles and later donated to the city, making it accessible to the public.As you explore, you'll discover a fascinating variety of objects that document the evolution of blacksmithing over centuries. From delicate keys and locks to artfully crafted grilles and fittings, as well as tools and everyday items – each piece attests to exceptional craftsmanship and historical significance. Pay attention to the natural light streaming through the tall church windows, which illuminates the surfaces of the exhibits differently – this offers excellent opportunities for atmospheric photographs.

The Gros Horloge, Rouen's famous clock tower, is an impressive testament to medieval clockmaking artistry and urban autonomy. This astronomical clock, dating from the 14th century, specifically 1389, is housed in an elegant Renaissance arch spanning the Rue du Gros Horloge and is flanked by an adjoining belfry. You'll notice that the clock face features only an hour hand, complemented by displays for moon phases and the days of the week, underscoring its historical significance as the city's timekeeper. The belfry, which once housed the city bells, now offers you an excellent panoramic view over Rouen's rooftops and the Cathedral. Our tip: It's best to visit the tower in the early morning to avoid the crowds and observe the facade's details in peace. For an atmospheric photo of the arch and clock, the perspective from the Rue du Gros Horloge is ideal.

The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture and a central landmark of Normandy. Its construction history spans from the 12th to the 16th century, which is reflected in the diversity of its stylistic elements. You will notice the impressive west façade with its three portals and asymmetrical towers, including the famous Butter Tower, whose construction was funded by donations for abstaining from butter during Lent. Inside, magnificent stained-glass windows await you, including some from the 13th century, as well as the tombs of important figures, such as the heart of Richard the Lionheart. The Cathedral served as inspiration for Claude Monet's famous series of over 30 paintings, capturing the changing light on the façade. Our Tip: Visit the Cathedral early in the morning to experience the tranquility and special light on the west façade before the large crowds arrive. For a unique perspective on the façade, similar to Monet's, position yourself on the Place de la Cathédrale.

The art museum possesses one of the most significant Impressionist collections in France outside of Paris, including one of Monet's paintings of Rouen Cathedral. In addition, the collection ranges from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Admission to the permanent exhibition is free.
