Shodoshima, the second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, offers a charming combination of Mediterranean flair and Japanese culture. You'll find Japan's first successful olive groves here, whose history and cultivation are extensively covered in the Shodoshima Olive Park. The island is also a traditional center for soy sauce production; you can learn about its making at the Marukin Soy Sauce Memorial Hall. The natural landscapes are also impressive, especially the dramatic Kankakei Gorge, which particularly captivates with its autumn foliage, and the mystical Angel Road, a sandbar accessible at low tide. Shodoshima was also an important location for art installations of the Setouchi Triennale, which have left lasting works. For a relaxed exploration, a visit in spring or autumn is recommended, and you can conveniently reach the island by ferry from Takamatsu or Himeji.
