Cholula

Cholula is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Americas and a testament to deeply rooted cultures. Its history spans over 2500 years, beginning in the Pre-Classic period as a significant religious and commercial hub for Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Olmecs, Toltecs, and Nahua.The most prominent architectural feature is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, an impressive engineering feat with the largest base in the world. Over centuries, it was expanded by various cultures and stands as a symbol of the development and decline of these ancient societies, until it disappeared beneath earth and vegetation after the Spanish conquest.The arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century profoundly shaped Cholula, leading to a unique cultural and architectural syncretism. The city is renowned for its numerous colonial churches – often cited as 365 – many of which were built upon the foundations of pre-Columbian temples. This juxtaposition of indigenous past and colonial present, particularly visible in the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, which crowns the pyramid, bears witness to a complex history of adaptation and blending. Local traditions like elaborate ceramics also attest to this rich heritage.

Cholula is excellent for exploring on foot; the picturesque downtown and the area around the Great Pyramid are particularly pedestrian-friendly. For longer distances within the city or trips to neighboring Puebla, local buses, known as Colectivos, are an affordable option; always keep small change handy for these. Cholula does not have a fixed metro or tram system, and the tourist train to Puebla is currently out of service.Taxis are readily available, but ride-sharing apps like Uber or Didi often offer more comfort, price transparency, and safety. For shorter distances or active exploration, bicycles can be rented, which is particularly suitable for flatter routes. E-scooters are less common, making bicycles a better choice. Pay attention to traffic and allow for more travel time during peak hours, but enjoy the convenient accessibility of the main attractions.
