    Construction of the Gothic cathedral began in 1221, with towers, chapels, and the octagonal Capilla del Condestable being added over three centuries. Inside, El Cid and his wife Jimena lie buried; also noteworthy are the gilded Escalera Dorada staircase and the choir stalls. UNESCO World Heritage site.

    The Charterhouse, approximately four kilometers east of the center, was founded in 1441 by John II and completed under Isabella the Catholic.     Castile's Old CapitalBurgos was founded in the 9th century and for centuries was the residence of the Castilian kings and a center of the wool trade. Construction of the cathedral began in 1221; it is the burial place of El Cid, who hailed from nearby Vivar. The Cistercian Abbey of Las Huelgas, founded in 1187, served as the royal burial site, while the Miraflores Charterhouse houses the tombs created by Gil de Siloé for the parents of Isabella the Catholic.Approximately 15 kilometers to the east are the Atapuerca archaeological sites, featuring some of Europe's oldest human traces. The findings are displayed at the Museum of Human Evolution in the city.

    Exploring Locally

    High-speed trains connect Burgos to Madrid in less than two hours. The station is located a few kilometers north of the city center and is connected by bus. You can explore the Old Town on foot. City buses run to the monasteries, and guided tours to Atapuerca depart from the museum with bus transport.
