Béziers

Béziers is considered one of France's oldest cities, with its history tracing back to antiquity. Its architectural heritage spans from Roman foundations to medieval structures.A settlement already existed on the hill above the Orb in the 6th century BC, maintaining close contact with Greek traders. Under Roman rule, the city became an important site along the Via Domitia. The darkest period was the Albigensian Crusade: the capture of the city and the massacre of its inhabitants in 1209 marked a turning point in Languedoc's history and remain part of the collective memory to this day.The cityscape is dominated by the Cathédrale Saint-Nazaire. Its fortified appearance bears witness to its tumultuous history, as the structure combines Romanesque and Gothic elements. The Pont Vieux over the Orb, whose substructure is said to date back to Roman times and which was extended in the Middle Ages, is another landmark.To this day, viticulture remains a pillar of the regional culture. Béziers is situated amidst one of the world's largest wine-growing regions by area, and vintner festivals and the Feria in August reflect this strong connection. The city also cultivates its Occitan language and cultural history, even if it is less prominent in daily life.

The historic center of Béziers is best explored on foot; many sights are close to each other, though it's an uphill walk to the Cathedral. For longer journeys, an urban bus network is available. You can easily reach the Fonserannes Locks by bike along the Canal du Midi. The train station is located at the foot of the old town next to the Plateau des Poètes, on the coastal route between Montpellier and Narbonne.
