    Marselisborg Deer Park

    Approximately 22-hectare wildlife enclosure in Marselisborg Forest, about four kilometers south of the center. Fallow and Sika deer roam freely and often come very close to you; wild boars live in their own enclosure. Feeding is prohibited. Open from sunrise to sunset, admission is free. During rutting season in autumn, it's best to keep your distance from the deer.

    The open-air museum has assembled historic houses from all over Denmark into a town. The quarters depict life in a Danish small town in the years 1864, 1927, 1974, and 2014, with furnished apartments, shops, and workshops. You can shop in some stores. In 2026, Den Gamle By was named European Museum of the Year. Plan at least half a day for your visit.

    The art museum, in its 2004 cube-shaped building, features Danish art from the Golden Age to today and international installations. On the roof, Olafur Eliasson's 'Your rainbow panorama' is a circular walkway of colored glass with city views. Plan for two to four hours.

    The Cathedral at Store Torv is Denmark's longest church. Inside, large-scale wall paintings from the late Middle Ages are preserved, and the winged altarpiece by Bernt Notke dates from 1479. Admission is free.

    Aarhus offers good and comparatively affordable food, thanks to its roughly 40,000 students. The scene is spread across three manageable areas, and you'll need at most a fifteen-minute walk between them.

    Jægergårdsgade

    The street in the Frederiksbjerg district south of the central station is one of the city’s liveliest food streets. Roasteries, wine bars, bistros, and delicatessens line the street, and it’s bustling in the evenings.

    Aarhus Street Food

    In a hall near the bus station, many stalls offer cuisines from around the world. Loud, busy, and unpretentious, plus one of the cheapest hot meals in the city centre.

    Culture and History

    Aarhus arose in the Viking Age as the settlement Aros at the river mouth. In the Middle Ages, the city was a bishop's see; its cathedral, begun late 12th century, was later Gothicized.Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller's City Hall (1941) is a key work of Functionalism. Aarhus was European Capital of Culture in 2017. The university defines the cityscape, leading to a vibrant café, bar, and cultural scene.

    Aarhus' nightlife offers you a diverse scene, ranging from lively student bars to sophisticated cocktail venues. Especially in the Latin Quarter and along the river, you'll find a good selection, including the typical Fredagsbarer and hidden gems like Gedulgt.

    On the Road in Aarhus

    Explore the centre on foot. The Letbane serves Central Station, harbour, Aarhus Ø, university, Grenaa, Odder. City buses cover other districts, including Moesgaard. Tickets are available via the Midttrafik app. Cycle paths are extensive. The airport near Tirstrup (approx. 40 km) has a bus to the centre.

    Mols Bjerge National Park is located in southern Djursland between Aarhus and Ebeltoft. The Ice Age left behind hills, hollows, and heath-covered slopes here, which appear almost mountainous by Danish standards.
